Kathy,
I wanted to update you on Grits' progress. Here is a photo
of Grits during her first hunting trip a week ago. We were
in Montana and had one day to hunt. The weather was
chilly, windy, and raining. Grits retrieved four of our six
rooster pheasants, all four of the mallards, and two sharptail
grouse. Two of the pheasant retrieves were marks at 100+
yards in grass taller then she was. All four mallard retrieves
were blinds of about 20 yards. On the ducks she had to go
down a sloped bank, cross a small creek and climb a very
steep bank to start looking for the birds. She found all of
them quickly. The grouse were easy marks of thirty yards
or less. She retrieves to hand, holds the birds as long as I
want her to. She is whistle trained to stop on command,
and is picking up left and right casting. The "back"
command is a little more difficult for her right now but she
is getting there. Quite a start for a 10 month old pup. She
is the sweetest dog, very relaxed until a bird is shot, then
look out. She rides really well in the cab of my truck,
watches out of the windshield until bored and then goes to
sleep. The trainer absolutely loved her and keeps telling me
how lucky I am to find such an easy going dog that drives
hard on retrieves. Thought you might enjoy the update. I
will also forward an email from my hunting partner.
Hope you and your clan are well and settled into the new
digs. Stay in touch.
